About Latterly
A Reading Room for Retirement Papers
Latterly was founded in Kuala Lumpur to give retirees a calm, structured space for reading national pension documents and maintaining an orderly household record folder — without commentary, without interpretation, and without pressure.
Back to HomeOur Story
Founded on a Quiet Observation
Latterly began in 2019 when its founder, a retired civil servant from Selangor, noticed that many neighbours reaching retirement age had accumulated years of pension-related letters, fund statements, and benefit notices in drawers and shoe boxes — unsorted, unlabelled, and never properly read. The papers were not lost; they had simply never been indexed.
The early sessions were informal: a small group sitting around a table, each person with their own folder of papers, working through a numbered list of document categories while one person read aloud from the EPF member handbook. No one was told what the documents meant for their personal finances. The point was the reading itself — slow, attentive, and shared.
By 2021, Latterly had moved into a dedicated room at KL Gateway Mall and formalised its three core offerings: the one-on-one indexing session, the six-session public-source reading course, and the year-long household records programme. Each offering remains organisational in scope. Latterly does not advise, plan, or interpret on behalf of any participant.
Today, Latterly serves retirees and near-retirees across the Klang Valley who want to approach their retirement documents with the same deliberate attention a reader brings to a library shelf — noting what is there, where it belongs, and where it was collected from.
Mission
What We Are Here to Do
Organise, Not Advise
Every session Latterly runs is built around sorting, labelling, and indexing. Nothing produced by a Latterly session constitutes financial planning, legal guidance, or consultancy of any kind.
Read Attentively
The reading course is paced to allow participants to follow along in the original source documents at a comfortable speed. No paraphrasing or substitution of source material takes place during sessions.
Maintain Consistently
The annual programme is built on the belief that a records folder is only useful if it is kept current. Quarterly check-ins make maintenance a routine rather than an annual panic.
Keep Privacy Central
Documents viewed during sessions are handled within the session room only. Latterly does not retain copies of participant documents, and session notes remain with the participant at the close of each session.
The Catalogue Staff
The People at the Desk
Halimah Norzaida
Founder & Lead Session Organiser
Retired from 28 years in the civil service, Halimah developed the indexing methodology used in every one-on-one session. She leads all one-on-one sessions personally and trains the reading course leaders.
Rajan Balakrishnan
Reading Course Leader
Rajan facilitates the Public Source Reading Course cohorts, guiding participants through EPF and KWAP official documents at a reading pace agreed by the group. He holds a background in adult education.
Siti Khadijah Ramlan
Records Programme Coordinator
Siti coordinates the Annual Household Records Programme, managing the quarterly check-in schedule and producing the structured folder template supplied to each household at year-end.
Standards
How Latterly Holds Itself to Account
Document Privacy
Participant documents are handled solely within the session room. No copies are retained by Latterly. All index sheets and reading logs produced during a session are given to the participant at close.
Scope Boundaries
Every session leader is trained to decline questions that fall outside organisation and document reading. Where individual circumstances require professional input, participants are pointed toward licensed channels.
Source Accuracy
All materials referenced in the Public Source Reading Course are verified against current official publications before each cohort. Outdated source documents are removed from the reference list without substitution.
Session Leader Consistency
Participants in the annual programme are assigned the same session leader for all five touchpoints in the year, so the folder structure and labelling conventions remain consistent from setup through to closing review.
Written Outputs Only
Every session closes with a written, numbered output — an index, a log, or a folder — rather than a verbal summary alone. Participants are not asked to rely on memory for anything discussed during the session.
Accessible Venue
The KL Gateway Mall session room is on Level 2, accessible by lift from both the LRT entrance and the car park levels. The room accommodates mobility aids and is kept at a comfortable temperature throughout sessions.
Context Note
Pension Documents and the Importance of Reading Them Carefully
Malaysia's national retirement landscape is documented across several publicly available bodies of material — the EPF member handbook, KWAP public summaries, SOCSO participant guides, and the periodic newsletters published by each of these bodies. These documents are comprehensive, regularly updated, and free to read. What they are not, for most readers, is easy to locate, sort, or cross-reference with one's own household filing.
Latterly's organisational work sits in that gap. A household that has spent an afternoon with a session leader mapping which document belongs in which folder, noting the official source for each category, and numbering every entry is in a different position from one that has not. Nothing in that afternoon changes what the documents say, but it changes how readily those documents can be found, compared, and carried to the appointments where they may be needed.
The reading course addresses a different aspect of the same situation. Many retirees have heard the name EPF or KWAP many hundreds of times but have never read the official scheme summaries from the first page to the last. The course provides a structured, unhurried occasion for that reading — not as a substitute for individual advice, but as the baseline of literacy from which more specific conversations can be conducted with greater clarity.
Latterly's work, in short, is the work of a good library — pointing to shelves, labelling spines, and creating the conditions under which reading can happen well. What readers choose to do with what they have read remains entirely their own matter.
